VIP tiers for your best customers

A few customers buy far more than the rest. VIP tiers give them a reason to stay with your brand longer and to spend more per order. You choose what earns a tier: money spent, orders placed, or points earned. Alpha Loyalty moves customers up on its own, and every tier brings its own rewards.

Turn your best customers into regulars

Every store has customers who come back more often and spend more than the rest. A VIP program gives that group something to aim for, and it moves two numbers at once: how big the next order is, and how soon it comes. That is average order value and repeat purchase rate, from customers you have already paid to acquire. You set it up once, and Alpha Loyalty keeps promoting customers as they buy.

How tiers are earned

Decide what counts as VIP in your store

Pick a condition for the program and set a threshold per tier. All activity is counted over the customer's lifetime, including orders placed before you launched the program, so your loyal customers land in their tier on day one. Tiers can also follow the points customers collect in your points program.

Lifetime spend

Customers move up when the total value of their orders passes your threshold.

Spend $1,000 in total → Gold tier.

Number of orders

Count how often a customer buys instead of how much they spend. Made for lower-priced catalogs.

Place 10 orders → Gold tier.

Points earned

Tie tiers to the points customers collect, so engagement counts as much as spend.

Earn 5,000 points → Gold tier.
Tier rewards

Rewards that make each tier worth reaching

Every tier carries up to 10 rewards, and you pick them tier by tier. A gift on the day a customer moves up brings the next order forward. A benefit that runs while they stay holds retention month after month. Most stores use both.

One-time and permanent

A gift on arrival, and a benefit that stays.

A one-time reward celebrates the moment: a $20 code, free shipping on the next order, a small gift. A permanent benefit runs the whole time they stay in the tier — 10% off every order, or free shipping for Platinum members. Both are shown under the tier on your store, so customers see what waits for them one level up.

How rewards apply

Perks reach the customer without a code hunt.

Automatic rewards are applied in the cart and at checkout on every qualifying order. The customer shops as usual, and the tier price is already there. Manual rewards wait behind an Apply button, so customers keep them for the order they want. Either way, nobody hunts for a code, and you send nothing by hand.

On your storefront

Tiers customers can see and work toward

Customers see the tier they are in and how close the next one is. That view is what moves the next order. Tier names, thresholds, icons and colors are yours to set, so the program looks like part of your brand.

  • In the loyalty widget, one click away on every page of your store
  • On a dedicated loyalty page you create in Alpha Loyalty and add to your menu
  • In customer accounts, where the tier sits next to the points balance

Running the program

Control who joins, test it, then launch

The right perks for the right customers

Wholesale and retail each get their own VIP program, running side by side. Customer tags decide who joins which, so the perks fit the group and your margins.

Launch with confidence

See your tiers exactly as customers will, as a guest or as a member, before anything goes live. Test the whole flow on a test account first.

Make moving up feel like an event

Send a congratulations email the moment a customer reaches a new tier, with the tier name in the message. Ready-made Shopify Flow templates get it running in minutes; Klaviyo and Omnisend work too.

Give your best customers a reason to stay

Set your tiers, pick the rewards, and let Alpha Loyalty promote customers for you.

Why stores run tiers

Tiers work on the numbers you already watch

A VIP program is a retention tool with a clear job. Set the thresholds against your own figures, and each tier pushes one of them up.

Average order value

Set a threshold just above your current average order, and the next tier is a reason to add one more item.

Repeat purchase rate

A customer close to the next tier buys from you again rather than from someone selling the same thing.

Customer lifetime value

Permanent benefits reward staying, so your best customers keep buying for years, not for one season.

FAQ

VIP tiers questions

How customers move up, what they get, and how rewards reach checkout.

Get started
Shopify has no tier system of its own, so it comes from an app. In Alpha Loyalty you pick one condition for the program — lifetime spend, number of orders, or points earned — and set a threshold for each tier. When a customer passes a threshold, they move into that tier and get its rewards. You do not promote anyone by hand.
Yes. All activity is counted over the customer's lifetime, not from the launch date. A customer who spent $1,200 with you last year is in the $1,000 tier the day you turn the program on. This is why most stores see their first VIP members straight away.
A tier is permanent once reached — customers are not moved down over time. They only move down when the condition itself changes, for example a refund or a cancelled order drops their lifetime spend below the threshold. For tiers based on points, this happens only if you enable point deduction for refunded and cancelled orders.
A one-time reward is given once, when the customer reaches the tier: an order discount, product discount, gift card, free shipping, or free product. A permanent benefit stays active while the customer is in that tier: an order discount, product discount, or free shipping. You can set up to 10 rewards per tier in any mix.
You choose per reward. Automatic rewards apply on every qualifying order in the cart and at checkout, with no action from the customer. Manual rewards wait in the loyalty widget behind an Apply button, so the customer decides when to use them. Note that Shopify allows 25 active automatic discounts per store in total.
Yes, through Shopify POS. In-store orders count toward the tier conditions the same way online orders do, and staff can apply a tier reward at the counter. A customer keeps one status wherever they buy.
Yes, with more than one program. Each VIP program uses a single condition, so to reward spend for one group and order count for another, you create two programs and filter participants by customer tag. Alpha Loyalty is built to run several programs at once, including drafts you keep ready to launch.
